Proyectos
Most interesting to me was how similar each Spanish speaking country is to one another. I found it very interesting that such an overwhelming amount of countries celebrate Quinceañeras.

Proyecta
The most interesting thing I learned from the projects is that in most Spanish speaking countries soccer is the most played sport of the countries.
Poster Project
I learned a lot from the presentations of the different Spanish countries. The most interesting fact was in some Spanish countries it is considered as polite if you arrive at an event 30 or more minutes late. In America if you are late it is very impolite.
Proyectos
I thought one of the most interesting facts was about the country of Chile. In their country, people are 50% less likely to have HIV/AIDS versus the United States of America. I also thought it was really interesting that Chile's flag looks almost identical to the flag for Texas, USA. Overall learned a lot about different Hispanic cultures from around the world.
Proyectos
It was interesting to learn about holidays in Spanish-speaking countries. Some of the customs were very similar to our customs here in the U.S., but some were very different. The most interesting fact I learned was that Colombians eat twelve grapes on New Year's Eve for good luck.
Proyectos
One of the most interesting facts I learned from the projects is that in one of the Spanish countries it is considered rude to show up on time. It is more formal to show up half an hour or forty five minutes late. In the United States this would be considered extremely rude.
Proyectos
All the projects on Spanish speaking countries were very interesting. One of the best things I liked about Spain was that in most traditional areas, after lunch time at around 3pm, they have a siesta. I think that a siesta after lunch could benefit everybody.

Proyectos
The most interesting thing I learned from the poster projects was that across many of the Spanish speaking countries, there are many shared customs that are the same. For example, a girl's quincinera is the equivalent of an American Sweet Sixteen, however it is always a big celebration.

Guillermo del Toro
Guillermo del Toro is a Mexican filmmaker who began making films when he was only eight years old in his home town of Guadalajara. He struggled long and hard to succeed, laboring on ten short films, none of which brought him fame. When he was 34 years old he was finally given an opportunity to make a major film when the American company Miramax gave him $30 million dollars to shoot a script he wrote called Mimic. During the shooting of this film his father was kidnapped in Mexico and held for ransom. It was an extremely stressful time for del Toro, and once his father was safely returned it was decided that the entire family would have to move from Mexico to prevent further ransom attempts. According to del Toro, there is not a day that goes by where he does not think about his forced exile from his home country. To date he has made a number of hugely successful films, including Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy, Blade II, and most recently, Pacific Rim.

Selena Quentanilla- Perez
Selena was a Hispanic American singer, songwriter, and fashion designer. She was born in Texas to a Mexican father and a half Cherokee mother. Her father being a musician, her love for performing blossomed at age nine when her father made Selena and her siblings into a musical group (with Selena as the lead vocalist). Because her schooling interfered with her music career, Selena's father removed her from school when she was in eighth grade (she got her high school diploma independently years late).
In 1987, she won Female Vocalist of the Year at the Tejano Music Awards- she won that award eight consecutive times after 1989. "Como La Flor", a song written by her brother, lander number six on the U.S. Billboard Hot Latin Tracks and paved the way for her Mexico tour in 1992. In 1993, the album "Live!" won Selena her first Grammy for Best Mexican American Album of the Year. Also in 1993, Selena opened her first boutique in her hometown in Texas. She made Yolanda Saldivar head of the store because Yolanda was responsible for the success of Selena's fan club.
In 1994, "Amor Prohibido" became one of the best selling Latin albums and certified 20x platinum (selling two million copies). After all of her success, she was referred to as "The Queen of Tejano Music" and the Mexican Madonna. EMI Records believed Selena had reached her peak with the Spanish market and began crossing her over to a solo American pop artist. Simultaneously, Selena's family noticed that there was money missing from an account associated with the boutique. The family confronted Yolanda Saldivar and fired her from her position. Weeks later, Yolanda asked Selena to meet her alone in a motel room (Yolanda carried a rifle with her to the motel). On March 31, 1995, Selena was killed by Yolanda Saldivar in a motel room in Texas, she was only twenty-three years old. Her death shocked the nation and two weeks after the murder, Governer George W. Bush named April 16 "Selena Day" in Texas.

Spain
Spanish is the official language of Spain, but there are
also many co-official languages. In Galicia, they speak Galician. In Cataluña,
Catalan and Aranese are spoken. In Euskera, they speak Basque, the only
non-romance language with an official status in Spain. There are also many unofficial
languages and dialects such as Aragonese, Asturian, Leonese, Extremaduran,
Occitan, and Fala.
Learning About Spain
I learned that Spain's National Holiday is on October 12th, because that was the same date Christopher Columbus set foot in the Americas. I also learned that businesses usually stay open from 9AM to 8PM Monday through Saturday, but are usually closed in the afternoons. However, most big businesses will stay open.
Spain
Many foods were brought to the new world from Spain. The Spaniards imported some foods such as tomatoes, potatoes, avocados, tobacco, and cacao to Europe. These words originated from Spanish words which is why they all end in "o" when translated to English.

Spain - Bull Fighting
Bull Fighting in Spain
Spain has a long history with bull fighting and has become a tradition for the country weather people like it or not. Some consider the sport to be barbaric and others consider it art. Matadors are in competition for trying to fight the bull and can often run a high risk of falling victim to the strength of the animal. If the matador does arise to defeat the bull, than they are celebrated by a overly cheerful audience of people whom throw roses and hats into the arena for the victory. Bull fighting has a rich history in being held historically in Roman style amphitheaters. This sport over all has been seen as a true show of man vs. beast.
